Department for International Development

The Department for International Development (DFID) leads the UK Government’s fight against world poverty.

DFID works directly in over 150 countries worldwide, with a budget of nearly £5.4 billion in 2007/2008. DFID works towards achieving the eight ‘Millennium Development Goals’, with a 2015 deadline. These aims include:

  • To halve the number of people living in extreme poverty and hunger
  • To ensure that all children receive primary education
  • To build a global partnership for those working in development

The Middle East remains a top priority for the UK Government. DFID is helping to deliver the MDGs and support efforts for sustainable peace in the region. We are working to strengthen Palestinian institutions, to improve their effectiveness in meeting their commitments to the Palestinian people, and to ensure humanitarian and development assistance is delivered effectively.

At the donor pledging conference for the Occupied Palestinian Territories Paris last December, the UK was one of the first to announce a substantial pledge and encouraged others to do the same. DFID has committed £243 million over three years, linked to political progress. DFID’s programme in 2007/08 amounted to £63.6 million.
